Tīrama, tīrama, ngā whetū | Musical Play

Lyrics, music and activities to help learn the reo Māori version of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star".

"Tīrama, tīrama, ngā whetū" is often sung in Julie's musical play classes, particularly around the Matariki celebration season.

To help families learn the lyrics, here are some colouring activities you can download, print, colour in and display on the fridge!

  • The star shape version can be cut out and hung, or glued onto a coloured piece of cardboard.

  • If you look closely at the melodic shape pdfs, you'll see that the star shape at the bottom the page outlines the shape of the 1st line of the melody. Point to the stars while singing the first line to teach melodic direction and shape. You can also have fun pointing to random stars and singing high and low pitches to match and create little improvised melodies. This helps lay a strong foundation for reading music later on and even helps readers grow sight reading skills.

  • There is also sheet music version with ukulele chords.
