Why You Should Be Mindful of Background Music in Early Childhood Settings | Musical Play

Why do we suggest being mindful of background music and all music choices in early childhood settings? Teachers & parents take note...

Young children rely on our support for regulation. When we choose the music, we are setting the tone for their energy levels and providing an external stimulus they need to try and tune out if it is interrupting their flow or disruptive to them.

We see many children who really struggle to regulate themselves, remain focused or stay engaged when there is music playing that is too fast, loud or continual.

What can we do as educators to ensure we are using music appropriately?

Choose music that is calming and fit for purpose. Stop and really look around when you have music playing – is it interfering? Is the centre calm? Is there a reason the music is on? What is that reason and is this option the best choice of music for it? Do you feel on edge with it playing? Are you tuning it out yourself?

When we apply mindfulness to music in this way we protect children who are still developing the ability to self regulate. We allow music to be a joyful experience and not one that is subconsciously frustrating.
